حجاب زنان در ایران باستان رایج بوده و سخت‌گیری‌های عصر اسلامی از جمله  پوشیدن لباس سیاه برای زنان، ادامه سنتِ‌ پیش از اسلام است.

The veiling of women was common in pre-Islamic Iran and it may be that some of  the rigors imposed on them in the early Islamic period­ represented a continuation of pre Islamic custom.
